Description This unit covers the competency required to operate a service hand grenade.Operating a service hand grenade involves the ability to safely handle, safely maintain, safely throw the grenade and obtain a satisfactory throwing accuracy in accordance with organisational standards. The assessment is to include the handling and throwing of live HE grenades and to achieve blast effect on the targets.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency would typically apply to a member of the Australian Defence Force.The individual will operate independently or as part of a team and will normally operate under orders and in accordance with the Rules of Engagement.

  • Occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements and recognised safety precautions are applied throughout the operation
  • Service hand grenade is identified and selected in accordance with supervisor's instructions and operational requirements
  • Service hand grenade is safely handled and carried in accordance with standard procedures
  • Service hand grenade is secured in accordance with standard procedures

  • Service hand grenade and associated equipment are cleaned and serviced as required
  • Defects are identified and rectified within limits of authority or reported to supervisor

  • Throwing position is adopted as required

Competency should be assessed using a live grenade usually on a live firing range.

Note: In Defence the assessment and training are conducted in accordance with the current weapons pamphlet. This would include 'dry' assessment to ensure that a safe environment is maintained.

Method of assessment

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

direct observation

interviewing the candidate

journals and workplace documentation

third party reports from supervisors

written or oral questions.
